How does NIFTY work?
The National Stock Exchange of India Ltd. (NSE) is the leading stock exchange in India and NIFTY is its flagship index. It is a well-diversified index comprising 50 stocks representing 13 sectors of the economy. NIFTY is owned and managed by India Index Services and Products Ltd. (IISL), which is a subsidiary of NSE.
To ensure uniformity across all indices, IISL has laid down certain eligibility criteria for stocks to be included in NIFTY. These include:
-The stock should be listed on the NSE
-It should have a minimum market capitalization of Rs. 3,000 crore
-It should have a minimum public shareholding of 10%
-It should have a minimum number of publicly traded shares of 1 lakh
NIFTY is calculated using the free float market capitalization weighted methodology. This means that the weightage of each stock in the index depends on the market value of its freely available shares (shares that are not held by promoters or strategic/locked-in shareholders). The index also uses full market capitalization (all outstanding shares) instead of just floated market capitalization (freely available shares), to avoid any bias towards large cap stocks.
